I might be allergic to pollen, actually

I tried cleaning up my laptop with alcohol swabs (which had expired and V had prohibited me from using them on wounds- but its alcohol right? How can alcohol expire? So, I use them anyways)

That's my laptop 1 minute after the clean-up. I guess he was right ( humph. )

On the better side, I think I am not allergic to dust but to pollens! A good friend had brought over flowers a week back- which had been sitting in front of my desk for a while. I think they are the cause of my anguish.

Also, Diet Coke ( which I hate) is helping relieve me of the symptoms. Maybe I should patent the idea.

I might be allergic to dust

Today morning, i woke up scratching my eyes out. but i have never been allergic to anything- is it the american food? is it the lack of exercise?

God! my nose and eyes are pissing me off.

What is Your religion?

A friend of mine is a strong devout Christian- goes to church every Sunday but suffers from jealousy and hatred.
Is her religion Christianity?

Another friend's friend does the 20 day Ramadan fast- but wakes up before sunrise to eat and comes home after sunset to have a feast.
Is his religion Islam?

A close friend does the 1 day fast every year- but can't define what the fast is for.
Is his religion Jainism?

Another close one, does havans on diwali and holi but doesn't know what the sanskrit words mean.
Is his religion Arya-Samaji?

---------------------------------
People usually fill out their religion on a form- the religion that their parents say they are of. The religion that they proudly and haughtily say they are of. Some of them will fight for this. Some extremists are willing to die for it.

But are we really the religion we say we are?

Is a Christian really a Christian if she is Jealous of others and hates her friend? What ever happened to 'love thy neighbor'?
Is a Jain really a Jain if he has replaced a stone idol with the picture of a Maharishi? Isn't the point of being a Jain to attain self realization by meditation and NOT do idol worship?
Isn't the point behind Ramadan to understand the grief suffered by the poor? How does a feast justify that?
Shouldn't an Arya-Samaji understand the scriptures that he follows rather than just read words he doesn't understand?

All religions are the same- they teach the same things, they ask you to do the same things. The path that leads to 'coming close to god' is a little different for each one. Then why do we go against our own religions and get arrogant about the name? Why do we believe that our god is the only one and better one?

Why is it that we are so blind to not even understand the teachings that our gods imparted thousands of years ago? Why do we still hate, get jealous, get angry, feel vanity and STILL have the audacity to call ourselves, Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jains or Jews?

[Don't look at me- I think that its our ignorance and insecurities that lead us to think that there exists an omnipotent being called god who will save us all. I do believe in the teachings of most religions though]

What does it take to start a business? Pt.1.0

Many people ask me that question. Many more people think they know.

The experience is individual and personal. Here is mine from observations of my firm and others that came and went:

Opening the company is easy.
  • The first 1-3 months are also easy. Not easy because you are making a lot of sales but easy because you are excited.
  • 3-6 months a still fun. There are worries about sales but the excitement is still lingering. 'No one can do this better than me' and 'I am better than thou cause I own a company' attitudes prevail.
  • 6-12 months see the closing down of the weakest companies.
  • >1 year: Only 3 type of companies survive now: a) Those who have this as a life style business b) Those who want to make big bucks and will strive very hard c) Those who still are trying to figure out how to do what they want to do but have the will to stick around.
  • 0-2 years: Your friends first complained and then some more. Now, they are angry because you never have any time to go anywhere or do anything. 7am - 10pm of working hours have converted compliments into concerns for health.
  • 2-3 years: Things start settling down and your work hours get easy. More people are hired and the outlook looks positive.
  • >3 years: Now, only 2 types of companies survive: a) Those who have this as a lifestyle business and earn enough to feed themselves and their families b) Those who are doing great and will turn into >$10m businesses
What it takes is patience. Determination. The drive to complete something you started. The will to survive on nothing for a while. The fun of working with your employees. The strength to take customer calls at 11pm on Saturday night. It takes a whole lot more to survive the guilt that drives you to work on Sunday; the guilt that tells you to work so your employees get paid. Only those who really have it can survive the stress of living under this guilt 24/7/365.

Many companies that I have seen being started have died. Many of them were competitors. Some of them were friends. Many more were acquaintances. They were owned by people 25-75. The first ones to go were the 25-29 age group ones. The rest were equally divided.

They were all started by people who knew they were the best and knew they would do it better than anyone could tell them how to.

The ones that survived were the ones with the above characteristics. The ones willing to rough out the troughs.

This is my personal opinion.

Nothing compares to Bungee Jumping

Vinit and I are in orlando for a convention.

While driving back to our hotel we saw two people tied between the above two poles and being shot into the sky!! We did the obvious thing: a U turn at 10pm, shelled out $50 to this road side ride and went up.

Honestly, it was calming but not scary. Not scary in the least sense of the word. And that is when we realised that we were tainted- tainted by bungee jumping. Never again will we be scared on roller coasters, never again will our adrenaline rush during free falls.

Six Flags just lost 2 of its biggest customers.

Questions that irritate me and V

Do you work?
Do you drive?
How did you allow Vinit to buy a bike?
Do you allow Vinit to ride?
OH! You ride too??!
Do you cook?
What do you cook?
But you will cook after marriage. Right?
What will he eat then?

Additions:
So, you don't know how to cook?

Jashmein Azadi! Swatantrata divas ki mubarakein! Happy Independence Day!

15th August 2006 Independence Day
Credits: www.timesofindia.com

Away from my country, but with my people, I celebrate today with friends. A small Indian dinner tonight, desi clubbing on Friday and New York's own Indian Day parade on Sunday.

What I miss is the chaat, the dozens of people coming over with sweets, going to India Gate, watching the Rashtrapati speech.

Being surrounded by the tri colours- in flags, in sweets, in clothes. Reading about the day in newspapers. Listening to the march-past by our house. The endless dinners and lunches and cocktails hosted by us and our neighbours. Climbing to the roof and saluting the flag.

--------------------------------

Happy Independence Day to all my friends. Let's celebrate this day for what it is- a mark of our freedom, the day of the beginning of India- of us- of our future generations. The day after which, we could say what we wanted to say, do what we wanted to do, make mistakes with the pride that they were ours to make.

The day because of which, I can start my own business, I can visit any club, date anyone I want to, build my community, sleep under India Gate.

The day because of which, I can proudly say I am Indian.

Life

Someday
Sometime
I will be free.

Free of constrictions
Free of restrictions
Free of ambitions
Free of expectations
Free of inhibitions
Free of ethicality
Free of morality
Free of fear
Free of rivals
Free of aggression

Unfortunately
Paradoxically
That will be the day
When I will be free of want
Free of the need to be free

Bhabhi and Rakhi?!

I am completely outraged!!

Rakhi is and has ALWAYS been the day when I get lots of money.

Now, because of my planned wedding in Jan, Vinit's sisters are sending ME rakhis.

Am I supposed to tie the Rakhi? Give money? I?
I- who should be recieving it????

It is not fair.
I never expected this.

Oh- and please don't come back to me lecturing about this day signifying love and not money. I was born as a girl after my bro to get cash from him on every possible occasion.

This is quite depressing.

Him

I will be going to India this October. This is the first time that I will go and he will not be there.
He was there everytime I went back. The one constant friend- the one with no motives- the one who was reliable- the one who was lovable- the one who was happy.

How will I see his parents? Go to his room? See his picture?

I loved him- one of my closest friends- and will always love him.

delinquency

There comes a time when you have procrastinated something for so long that you are embarassed to even face it.

Rakhi is tomorrow- apparantly (I can always make it day after tomorrow with the us/india time difference ;-) )

I still haven't bought Rakhis or the sweets that I usually send. And this time, my bro has decided to be away from me in another ****** continent. I will probably be on time if I overnight the DHL for the 2 cousins in US- my my dear bro will probably get it a bit late in India.

hmm... its probably fine considering I am still waiting on my last year's Rakhi gift. (I haven't forgotten bhaiya so drop your hopes)

I will have to rush to the DHL warehouse- should leave now (1.5 hours to go to Indian street, buy rakhi, buy sweets, pack it, label it, drop to dhl shipping place 30 miles away)

( make that 1.25 hours)

Update: Vinit Bhansali decided to get on a conference call right when I was about to leave. humph. Plan B-> premptive strike- called all my bros and confessed. :-) Now I can send it out tomorrow. :-)

Blackwater rafting!

We have been doing whitewater rafting for sometime but I had never heard of this:

You wear a helmet, protective clothing and a tube. Then you are thrown in an underground river! ( How scary must that be?) Apparantly, Waitomo Caves, New Zealand offers this unique experience.

I can't wait to go there! :-D

Logical Religion P 1.0-- Of women, makeup and fat

Before I start, I will make two points:
1) I believe that putting make-up makes you look bad.
2) I am a business owner and I know to the fullest extent what putting a lot of money in marketing can do.

If you understand where I am going and if you are offended in any way, stop.
--------------------------------

The core of my problem with makeup is in the cliche saying- "Inner beauty"

Women, across the world, have always had different standards of beauty- even within the boundaries of India or the US. For someone growing up watching TV, beauty means being as thin as possible or at least, being thinner than their natural weight. Just stop and look around at the number of women around you - no matter how pretty or thin or fat or ugly- who are counting calories.

On the other spectrum are people untouched by TV who consider being plump good.

Why would there be a difference between the two?
-Marketing of cosmetics companies and people who like makeup, by ways of models, videos and magazines.

You can notice similar trends for makeup- with women from different cultural groups having separate notions of beauty.

Latino women, in general, always have higher standards of being sexy ( with curves- bigger breasts and hips). They are the one culture in which you will always see the deepest neck lines and most sexy dresses. They will- put on tons of makeup. They will not- starve themselves to death.

American women, in general, will ALWAYS starve themselves no matter which social bracket they come from. Bigger breasts and smaller hips are important to them. They will put on less makeup than latinos but as I said will starve themselves to the point of anorexia.

Indian women, in general, either put on a lot of makeup that does not even match. I am referring to the thick dark red lipstick with dark black eye liner mixed with mascara running down their eyes. And, how can I forget the over abundance of that liquid that is put all over the face and the red blush?

All these examples are of people portraying their outside appearances as sexy or pretty. But what makes a woman sexy has nothing to do with how thin she is or how big and pouty her lips are.

Men are attracted to women for their inside beauty. I do not mean intelligence or nature. Women who think that they are sexy, exude their sexiness and men are attracted to it. Think sexy means that you act sexy. Body language conveys more and attracts more than makeup does.

Women are beautiful.

Their hands have soft skins which you want to hold on to. Their faces, are full of light and features that make you stop and stare. Lips have the gentleness you want to kiss. Words that come out of them are soothing, the voices that make the words, fill you with love. Curves on their bodies make you want to hold them. Their skin, so soft; their eyes, so deep; their hair, so lustrous. The way their cheeks curve and meet their lips, would make you gape. Hold them, and you embrace life.

Why paint over such sweetness with makeup?

Revel in your body. Be happy in your fat- be proud of your eyesores. Be confident of your features- be glad of your skin. Love your hair, love your legs and most importantly, love yourself.

-------------------------
Personally, I have tons of blemishes and I am happy with every one of them. Starting from the freckles caused by the Miami sun to moles which just keep coming.

This entry is not me being supercilious to other women. I hope others understand and stop all this painting.

This is my religion- a logical one.

Indian Flag with Hersheys Kisses!

Israel- the terrorist.

A Lebanese volunteer carries a child killed in an Israeli air raid in Qana, 6 km (4 miles) from the port-city of Tyre (Soure) in south Lebanon, July 30, 2006. REUTERS/Zohra Bensemra (LEBANON)

Downing St. has just rejected Foreign office calls to ask for a ceasefire in the middle east.

Now, why would that be?

Who is a terrorist- a government legally, democratically elected by its people holding hostage 2 people to bargain for its own OR the government who sits on a land not originally theirs and killing hundreds of people, bombing buildings full of children?

It is extremely shocking that there is virtually no world reaction to Israel bombing the crap out of Lebanon. It is not shocking in the case of US but thoroughly disappointing. Most Americans, even though they cover themselves with politically correct language and actions, are still racist and more importantly, non-secular. Muslims, to them, are terrorists- the prima facie evidence, of course, is that Osama bin Laden is Muslim.

About a century or so ago, Jews faced much of the same problem- of prejudice (not of being labeled terrorists). Still, generations change, people forget.

The only country that has the political, financial influence to stop this bloodshed is America. That is a fact.

Can the individual leaders in this country then, look beyond their own careers and ask for a ceasefire?

I hope- yes.
I know- not.
