UMPC!!

Our latest addition in the office. :-) The UMPC is a better version of a laptop for mobile people. It has a touch screen like a handheld but the power of a laptop. As you can see above, the keyboard is on the screen itself and split in two- letting you use your thumbs to type! It is incredible ingenuity!!

Ipaq vs. UMPC vs. Laptop

That's my old Ipaq phone which is a little bit bigger than most HP Ipaqs and Vinit's IBM laptop which is a LOT smaller than any other laptop.

The Samsung UMPC (which we got for $1050 when it is supposed to be 500-600 in a few months) , has the following configuraiton which is almost close to my laptop's configuration although it is not an IBM:

  • 512 mb RAM
  • 40 gb harddrive
  • 900 mhz
  • 7" WVGA TFT LCD
  • Wireless Lan (I dont know which one its probably a 'b')
  • Bluetooth
  • 2 USB
  • 1 external ODD power port
  • CF Card Slot
  • Monitor port (important :-) )
  • No cd/dvd
  • No IR
  • A lever which can make it stand at 20 or 80 degrees
Vinit's observation- It looks a lot like a PSP. Either Samsung stole the PSP main engineer or they spent a lot of time playing games!

Apparantly the next version will have a 3g phone built in. If they do, I am dumping my laptop and getting this. No need of carrying a bag around- it fits in my purse!!!

Yes, it is interesting to note how well it fits in your purse.
I think this is a huge hidden market the UMPC (can we all just call them Origami, please?!) can work towards.
